Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD)

CDPD is an ideal solution for transaction-based communications and for transmissions involving short, “bursty” messages. Some ideal applications include e-mail, database querying, dispatch services, mobile traffic information, credit card verification, and emergency services. Other applications suited for CDPD are those for which sessions (or login time) may be lengthy, but where communication is sporadic. With CDPD, the user is charged only for the data communicated and not for connect time.

Applications can serve either vertical or horizontal markets. Any TCP/IP application can be used over CDPD, although LAN applications and TCP/IP protocol stack parameters may need to be adjusted or optimized for the wireless environment.
